"Fumbling haplessly while trying to open a compact disc or a packet of ham has become a daily headache of modern life."

HELLO. TRYING TO OPEN THIS HAM IS GIVING ME A HEADACHE.

Bloody hell.

It should be noted that I, personally, do not get a headache from opening ham. I am mearly expressing sarcastic disbelif that the bbc might say something as stupid in a "news" article.

Just clearing that up.

Also, is the vegie in the sence of Ashley "bacon buttie" Tuck?

"Vegie" is a term that implies that meat is not eaten, and it is "assumed" that this is for some ethical reason.

OK, I'm "coming out", it's true, I'm not a full blown vegie..

My own personal reason for not eating meat is not for ethical reasons, but because I don't really enjoy it, mainly brought about, as a kid, by having a sunday roast that lasted in some form or another until wednesday or thursday, cold meat, casseroled cold meat, warmed up cold meat, yuck.. However, a bacon buttie is a different matter, as is the odd sausage, steak, and occasional friday night kebab.

It's all a matter of personal choice..

Why do individuals have to be labelled by society to fit in a group?

I'm confused by the point you are making here, as it was yourself who brought the term "vegie" up, along with any preconceptions it incurs.

Why do people try and label other people? I theorise that this is caused by a fair percentage of the population striving to meet the criteria of a label they personally wish to possess. If people weren't so keen (for whatever reason) to pigeon-hole themselves as "person of type X", perhaps there would be less temptation or justification for generalisation by others.
